Colin has completed marathons and Ironman Triathlons before, but running the Chicago Marathon in a Lurie Children’s uniform will have a deeper meaning for the Chicago native, a two-time brain tumor survivor. At 14, Colin was diagnosed with a rare ganglioglioma brain tumor. Gangliogliomas often grow slowly and do not spread to other parts of the body, but without timely treatment they can develop into a higher grade, more malignant tumor. Colin was referred to Lurie Children’s and underwent surgery the next day to have the tumor removed. The diagnosis and surgery unfolded quickly because of the large size and increased pressure on his brain. It was especially challenging given the tumor’s sensitive location involving areas of memory, speech, and motor function.Colin said his medical team, “felt like family,” and kept him calm and optimistic. The surgery was successful in removing most of Colin’s tumor. After surgery, he went to rehabilitation to work on his speaking, memory, and walking. Since 2015, Colin has overcome many obstacles and has since made a full recovery. Colin felt a wakeup call to embrace life’s opportunities while recovering from his first surgery. Inspired by the kindness and compassion of his teachers, the persistence and dedication of his medical team, and a family friend committed to pushing the limits, Colin focused his energy on training as an endurance athlete. He has completed several marathons and recently finished his second Ironman Triathlon in Texas. Colin’s inspiring journey has not been without setbacks. Colin’s tumor returned years later, and he had a second surgery at Lurie Children’s in 2023. Despite the tumor’s recurrence, Colin continues to make the most of each day. At 23, not only is Colin inspiring Lurie Children’s patients to chase their dreams, but he is also inspiring the next generation as a pre-school teacher for deaf and hard of hearing children. During Brain Tumor Awareness Month, Lurie Children’s celebrates that brain tumor patients are so much more than their diagnoses. Thanks to incredible research and dedicated care taking place, there is more hope for pediatric brain tumor patients than ever before. Lurie Children’s is looking forward to cheering Colin on in the 2024 Bank of America Chicago Marathon!

The last year and a half has been marked by many ups and downs for the McBride family. What began as suspected GI troubles in now 7-year-old Beckett quickly revealed something much more worrisome: a brain tumor diagnosis. Due to the location of Beckett’s low-grade glioma, surgical removal was unfortunately never an option for him. Instead, he began an intensive chemotherapy treatment plan last year that took a serious toll on his body, eating habits and bright personality. As with so many experiences in life, things seemed to get worse before they got better. But today, and in honor of #BrainTumorAwarenessMonth, we’re so happy to share that things did, in fact, get better for Beckett. After carefully reevaluating and adjusting his treatment strategy with neuro-oncologist Dr. Angela Waanders, today Beckett is showing the type of progress that’s filled his family with a refreshed sense of hope – an essential to help carry them through this cancer journey they’re on. “We’ve started doing little sighs of relief,” Beckett’s mom, Nora, said. “He’s way more like the kid he was before the tumor started affecting him. We get to see the energy, the silliness, his personality is back to where it was. It does feel like a light at the end of the tunnel even though we still live day to day, chemo to chemo, MRI to MRI.”Lurie Children’s Brain Tumor Program offers highly specialized, state-of the-art care for children and teens with brain tumors, and the expert team is committed to identifying a treatment plan that addresses the needs of each unique patient. Read more about how Beckett got his shine back after the cloud of a brain tumor diagnosis on the blog: https://lnkd.in/e_PMavB2, and more about Lurie Children’s Brain Tumor Program and critical research at luriechildrens.org.
