Rewind report: June 2024 | Gardiners Creek parkrun (1)

Any month that comes with five parkrun days is a great month!

And in an already awesome month, the winter solstice event on 22 June may have been the highlight. Coming at the end of the longest, darkest night of the year, we declared it Pajama Day. Roll straight out of bed, throw on some runners and turn up in your sleepwear. Absolutely no judgement.

Rewind report: June 2024 | Gardiners Creek parkrun (2)Rewind report: June 2024 | Gardiners Creek parkrun (3)

Doubling-down on the dress-ups, any parkrun day that falls on the 22nd is automatically Tutu Day (because two twos, OK?). Roll straight out of bed, throw on a tutu and turn up in your balletwear. Again, absolutely no judgement.

Indeed, some parkrunners weren’t encumbered by the choice and just went with both. And why not?

Pacer day: 13 July

Here’s a rare one at Gardiners Creek parkrun: pacer day!

On Saturday 13 July, the Mad Rabbit Crew will be headlining our event, providing all our volunteers plus pacers.

Currently there are pacers signed-up to cover the target times of 20:00, 22:30, 25:00, 27:30, 30:00, 32:30, 35:00, 37:30, 40:00 and 45:00. So if you have your sights set on any of those PBs, this is a great chance to chase down that elusive time.

A headline event is always exciting and we hope you can make it!

National Tree Day: 21 July

On Sunday 21 July, the Friends of Gardiners Creek Reserve are hosting a National Tree Day planting in our beautiful park:

“Help us plant much needed natives to revegetate our important Gardiners Creek corridor. A small section of 300 plants. Just near Fletcher Parade. Some hand tools and gloves provided. Snacks provided. Bring your water bottle.”

It’s on from 10am until 12:30 – get along and help out, even if you only have half an hour to spare.

Remember, digging is a great core strength workout – cross-training, yeah!

(Fletcher Parade is at the southern end of the park, near our first bridge crossing.)

5 questions

How this works: whenever we have a volunteer milestone or 100+ parkruns milestone, we try to get in touch with the parkrunner to ask our 5 questions. Whoever gets back to us with their answers, makes it into the report.

[If you’ve reached one of these milestones lately and you want to be interviewed, get in touch: gardinerscreek@parkrun.com]

Henry

100 parkruns

How, where and when did you get started in parkrunning?
I got started at Gardiners Creek, over 2 years ago, when my friend Taj convinced me to come along and give running a try.

What is your favourite parkrun?
My favourite is Gardiners Creek, mainly because it is my home parkrun - nice and close so I don't have to wake up too early Rewind report: June 2024 | Gardiners Creek parkrun (31) and also because of the minimal hills.

What parkrun would you most like to do but haven’t done yet?
I would love to do one outside of Victoria. It would be great to travel around exploring different parkruns.

What is your most memorable parkrun moment?
My most memorable parkrun moment was at Studley Park parkrun when my younger brother came out of nowhere and beat me in the last 100m. I still have to get him back for that.

What is your favourite volunteer role?
My favourite volunteer role is the finish tokens. I love seeing everyone finish their runs and being able to congratulate them on their run.

Jessie

100 parkruns

How, where and when did you get started in parkrunning?
I got into parkrunning in 2018 by tagging along with my cousins! I ran Pakenham parkrun and thought that it was great to keep me accountable! So i started attending my local parkrun, Gardiners Creek, with some school friends and now it’s just become a part of my usual week!

What is your favourite parkrun?
The best parkrun I’ve done was probably overseas in Germany. Alstervorland parkrun along the Alster river in Hamburg. It was in winter, so everywhere was full of snow, but parkrun was still on!! kudos to the vollies setting up in the cold!

What parkrun would you most like to do but haven’t done yet?
I’d love to do Torquay parkrun, I’ve done a few scenic beach locations already, but i it gives me an excuse to get down to the beach again!

What is your most memorable parkrun moment?
My most memorable moment would have to be my 100th parkrun! It was such a great time surrounded by all of the parkrun friends i had made over the last 5 years of coming to parkrun. It’s such a great community!

What is your favourite volunteer role?
It would have to be the photographers! You’ll always see me doing a fun pose or jump in the photos.

Zoe

100 parkruns

How, where and when did you get started in parkrunning?
My husband's brother-in-law was the one who introduced me to parkrun when visiting us in Perth many years ago. The first parkrun I did was Maylands Peninsula parkrun on our eldest son, Zev's 1st birthday but It wasn't until a few years after that, that it became our favourite place to be on a Saturday morning.

What is your favourite parkrun?
I really do love Gardiners Creek but I also adored the parkrun that Zev designed at our house despite it not quite meeting the official 5km length. Zev was Run Director and Timekeeper and he and his friend had created Finish Tokens for everyone. We had a total of 10 neighbours and family members run, jog or walk the event. The first finisher completed the course in 20.48 seconds.

What parkrun would you most like to do but haven’t done yet?
I'd love to visit the original home of parkrun one day, Bushy parkrun.

What is your most memorable parkrun moment?
It was very exciting to celebrate my 100th parkrun at the same time as my Mum's 50th!

What is your favourite volunteer role?
Token sorting is pretty fab and it's also really fun cheering everyone on while being a marshall.

Rewind report: June 2024 | Gardiners Creek parkrun (32)To celebrate Greg’s 100th parkrun, Zoe’s boys surprised him by turning up to parkrun dressed as Greg!

Richard

100 parkruns/25 volunteers [May]

How, where and when did you get started in parkrunning?
My first parkrun was on the 6th of March 2021 at Gardiner's Creek. I was initially recruited by Craig Ryan, who many will have heard of.

What is your favourite parkrun?
It probably is Gardiner's Creek!

What parkrun would you most like to do but haven’t done yet?
Nambour, in the hope of seeing the emu.

What is your most memorable parkrun moment?
I can't think of a single one, but I love seeing people I know when I had no idea they were into parkrun!

What is your favourite volunteer role?
I like all the finish line roles. You get to hang out with the other vollies at the start, then congratulate all the runners when they finish.

Choose your own type of fun

Have we talked about The Fun Scale here before? Never mind, let’s go again.

Type I fun is the stuff you know that you’ll enjoy, and you do. It’s effortless joy, all the way.

Type III fun is not actually fun at all – it’s grim, miserable, usually dangerous and possibly fatal.

Then there’s Type II fun. According to Erin Strout writing in the Washington Post:

“But Type II fun? That’s the sweet spot. It challenges you without putting you in danger — and it’s often uncomfortable but in ways that also make you feel alive.”

Type II is the fun that makes the best stories afterwards.

Do we have moments of type II fun at Gardiners Creek parkrun? Yeah, we’ve had a few.

SRL Update: June

The Suburban Rail Loop’s Burwood: June works update lists “Day works: Ongoing to September” in Bennettswood Reserve. This is the first time they have named a specific month for completion of this phase of the works. We don’t want to read too much into this, but it does look good for a return to our standard course before too long.
